Indian American community leader Ramesh Patel dies of COVID-19

A longtime community leader in the Indian American community has died of COVID-19, reports The Tribune.

“Very sad to learn about the passing away of Ramesh Patel, the Founder Member and Chairperson of Federation of Indian Associations (FIA), after 2 month long fight against COVID-19. A highly respected Indian American Community leader, we will miss him very much. RIP!” India’s Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu tweeted.

According to India West, Patel is also the former president of the National Federation of Indian American Associations which called him “a courageous man who fought many battles but the battle with Covid-19 he could not win.”

Patel won the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2013 and worked in the forensic investigation division of the New York Police Department, reported News18. His friends fondly refer to him as “Kaka.”

He is survived by his wife Sucheta, son Suvas and daughters Manisha and Kunjal. He was 78.
