Anti-blackness in Asian community acknowledged, but not everyone agrees

The Asian American Commission of Massachusetts is getting push back after acknowledging the “deep roots of anti-blackness within the AAPI community.”

In its statement, the commission said the death of George Floyd and the involvement of former officer Tou Thao “pushes us to confront how AAPI people can be complicit in anti-Black racism and oppression.

“We acknowledge the deep roots of anti-blackness within the AAPI community and commit to engaging to an ongoing and necessary process of healing these wounds. We vow to raise our voices alongside Black people and other communities of color, and work to dismantle racism in our homes, neighborhoods, workplaces and institutions.”

However, speaking on WBZ Newsradio, State Senator Dean Tran said “I’m not speaking for my brothers and sisters in the Asian community, I’m speaking for myself,” Tran said. “That is, this so-called ‘white privilege’ never played a role in my accomplishments, and that is an insult.”

Tran said he disagrees that many Asians are anti-Black.

However, many who engage on social media with Asian Americans have seen many postings that express outrage over Black on Asian crime and also wonder aloud why discrimination against Asian Americans does not get the same level of attention.

There seems to be little sympathy in these postings to the plight faced by many Blacks in the United States.

  1. RE: Anti-blackness in Asian community acknowledged, but not everyone agrees: There’s anti blackness in other communities too. See the poem Y Tu Abuela Donde Esta?

  2. RE: Anti-blackness in Asian community acknowledged, but not everyone agrees: There is an anti-blackness in the Asians of the immigrate community and those asians who wanna be white. But there is more sympathy and empathy towards Blacks among those Asians who born here and working class.
