Hundreds exercise in Torrance Park to protest anti-Asian racism

Hundreds gathered at Wilson Park in Torrance, CA Friday, the scene of two anti-Asian tirades from a Long Beach woman, to exercise their support for the Asian community.

“I just think the show of love here will make more people think twice before saying those kind of words,” said one woman to KTLA.

The protesters were inspired to exercise in black clothing because a Filipino American working out at the park was berated for wearing black in the sun and told to “Go back to whatever (expletive) Asian country you belong in.”

Some participants even performed the same exercise routine as the Filipino woman.

“I think it was really important for the Torrance community to be supportive,” said Andrea, who declined to give her surname. “Hopefully we can be better and come together,” she told the Daily Breeze.

As AsAmNews first reported just minutes after the official announcement, police in Torrance identified Lena Hernandez, 56, as the woman seen in two videos subjecting two Asian Americans to racial slurs. Hernandez has also been connected to a third case going back to last October.

“I’m definitely still feeling angry,” Kayceelyn Salminao told CBS LA. Salminao says she was assaulted by the woman at a mall in the October attack when she tried to intervene to defend a janitor. “Who is allowing this person to still be on the streets,” said Salminao.

Police say they have showed up to several addresses in Long Beach, but have yet to locate the suspect. If you have any information of her whereabouts, you are asked to call Long Beach Police.
