Police make arrest after Torrance incidents go viral

A woman caught on videos harassing Asian Americans two separate times on the same day has been arrested for a third incident in Southern California.

ABC7 News reports police in Torrance arrested Lena Hernandez Friday for a misdemeanor battery charge for something that happened in October.

However, according to the Daily Breeze, she will not be charged for her volatile confrontation with two Asian Americans last month.

Police have come under intense criticism for their lack of action and delay in pressing charges in these three cases.

Hernandez, 54, is out of custody on $1 bail, reported KABC. That has become common of late in misdemeanor cases due to concern about social distancing in jail.

Hernandez first gained wide attention after telling a Filipino American woman to “Go back to whatever f*cking Asian country you belong in.”

Later that day, she confronted a father and his two son’s in the same city park saying “I play the game in which you get f*cked to death.”

After videos of both incidents went viral, a third woman came forward saying the same suspect attacked her at a local mall. In that case, the victim says she was physically assaulted by Hernandez after she came to the defense of a janitor who she said was being verbally harassed by her.

That victim, Kayceelyn Salminao, said she filed a police report, but police did little to investigate.

City Attorney Patrick Q. Sullivan released a statement explaining why no charges are being filed in the later two cases.

“After a careful review of all the evidence available at this time, there is insufficient evidence to support filing any criminal charges against Ms. Hernandez,” Sullivan said. “Currently, there are critical gaps in the evidence regarding how each incident unfolded that result in the lack of necessary certainty required to initiate criminal prosecution against any suspect.”
