Good Samaritan drowns in rescue of 3 children in raging river

A Central California man lost his life trying to save the lives of three children he did not know.

CNN reports Manjeet Singh, 29, saw three children struggling in the water at Kings River in Reedley.

“He didn’t know them, but just saw them needing help so he jumped in,” Reedley Police Department commander Mark Ediger said.

According to KCRA, Singh’s family and friends worked together to pull two of the children out of the water. The current swept away a third child who was found down stream and taken to the hospital where she is in critical condition.

Unfortunately Singh was pulled underwater soon after jumping in. Rescuers found him 40 minutes later unresponsive. Doctors declared him dead at the hospital.

“First he jumped in the water to save the kids and then he opened his turban and threw it like a rope. He’s thinking they were going to catch the turban and pull out the kids from the river,” said Gurpreet Singh to KFSN.

“(He was a) very very good friend and big brother. I’m lost without my brother. He is 29 only,” He said
