Asian American victim testifies in sentencing of the Golden State killer

A Sacramento superior court judge Friday sentenced former police officer and notorious Golden State Killer Joseph DeAngelo to 11 consecutive life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole, CNN reports.

DeAngelo confessed to 13 murders and 50 rapes throughout California.

Among the victims with the courage to testify against him was Joanne Miyao.

“I would like Mr. DeAngelo to meet the woman he violated… who he may have thought he broke but did not,” said Miyao, the victim of his 42nd rape attack, describing herself as “a survivor.”

“As for forgiveness, I am not there yet. I am not sure I can get there,” the Los Angeles Times reported Miyao said at the sentencing hearing.

CBS5 posted a copy of Miyao’s entire statement online.

“Do you remember holding a knife to my throat as you stuck your disgusting penis in my mouth?” Miyao asked in court. “What I really wanted to do was bite your penis off your body, but my hands were tied behind my back, blindfolded with that knife at my throat.

“I’ve weathered through this horrible experience in my then young life with even more confidence, more perseverance, strength and endurance. Your illusion of power to overcome me backfired Mr. DeAngelo. I chose to come through being a stronger confident woman and live my life normally and not have fear dictate my life.”

Judge Michael Bowman said the court statements given by the victims will stay with him for life.

He described the life sentenced as the maximum allowed under the law.

“And while the court has no power to make a determination where the defendant is imprisoned, the survivors have spoken: Clearly the defendant deserves no mercy.”
