Michael Vang, a 20 year-old from St. Paul, MN, and considered to be the first Hmong American pro soccer player in the U.S. has helped his team, Forward Madison FC move up the rankings.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, Vang, who played in his first game mid-August, helped the team secure their first lead of the season with an early goal.

“Michael Vang was advertised as a player who could make a big impact in the offensive midfield for Forward Madison FC. Once he finally became available to play, it took eight minutes Friday night for Vang to live up to the billing. Vang’s early goal gave Forward Madison its first lead of the season […]”

While Vang was ready to play for the University of Pacific in Stockton, California on a scholarship, he ended up playing in Portugal’s pro league, for Sociedad Uniao 1 Dezembro. Because of rules on international player limits however, he ended up coming back to Minnesota after the stint where he eventually landed on Forward Madison FC.

According to reports from the Pioneer Press, Vang has a bright future ahead of him being called a “special talent” by his coach Daryl Shore.

“If he keeps developing the way we think he will, he’s obviously mature beyond his age now, but he’s going to mature more…He’s on their radar. I think Mike has a lot of potential and we are going to one day see him play in MLS or we will see him playing overseas somewhere.”

Vang’s older brother, Brian Vang, followed in his footsteps and was also invited to Forward Madison’s tryouts in January. He’s now playing with the Michigan stars in the National Premier Soccer League.

Note: While Chou Yang was a member of the Minnesota Thunder, according to their stats, he did not play in any games.
