The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that films must meet new inclusive hiring standards to qualify for Best Picture, Vanity Fair reports. The goal is to help promote diversity on-screen and behind the camera.

The new set of standards will be enforced in 2024 for the 96th Oscars, according to The New York Times. Until then, films hoping to qualify in 2022 and 2023 must submit a confidential academy inclusion standard form.

The standards are divided into four categories: A, B, C and D. They were modeled after requirements set by the British Film Institute for BAFTA categories, according to Vanity Fair.

  • STANDARD A:  ON-SCREEN REPRESENTATION, THEMES AND NARRATIVES
  • STANDARD B: CREATIVE LEADERSHIP AND PROJECT TEAM
  • STANDARD C:  INDUSTRY ACCESS AND OPPORTUNITIES
  • STANDARD D: AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT

To qualify for Best Picture, a film would need to meet at least two of the four categories. The film needs to meet at least one of the requirements within each category to meet that category. The standards will only apply to films wishing to qualify for the Best Picture category.

The requirements have been met with praise and criticism. Actress Kirstie Alley has slammed the Academy for their decision, according to People.

“This is a disgrace to artists everywhere…can you imagine telling Picasso what had to be in his f—— paintings. You people have lost your minds. Control artists, control individual thought .. OSCAR ORWELL,” Alley said in a since-deleted tweet.

“I’ve been in the motion picture Academy for 40 years. The Academy celebrates freedom of UNBRIDLED artistry expressed through movies. The new RULES to qualify for ‘best picture’ are dictatorial .. anti-artist,” Alley, 69, added. “Hollywood you’re swinging so far left you’re bumping into your own ass.”

The Academy hopes that the standards will be a catalyst for

“We believe these inclusion standards will be a catalyst for long-lasting, essential change in our industry,” Academy President David Rubin and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson said in a statement Tuesday.
