Neflix names head of global TV: A win for representation

Netflix appointed Bela Bajaria its newest head of global TV, signifying the start of a new era for the streaming company, Variety reports.

Bajaria, a London-born South Asian American, is a seasoned entertainment executive who’s worked at CBS and NBCUniversal. She has been working with Netflix to expand their global network for the past four years, Variety reports. Bajaria’s resume also includes Mindy Kaling’s The Mindy Project, the first major show from a South Asian female creator and executive producer. She’s also the executive behind You and the Queer Eye reboot.

“Since joining Netflix in 2016, Bela has demonstrated her versatility and creativity – building out our unscripted team and helping to take our local language slate, which is increasingly important for our members, to the next level,” Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos said, Deadline reports. “I can’t wait to see what Bela and the TV team achieve in the years to come.”

According to Deadline, Bajaria’s promotion from VP of Local Language Originals (non-English TV programming) coincided with the departure of another Netflix executive, Cindy Holland, who was the VP of Original Content (all English-language programming).

In another Variety article, Holland said her 18 years at Netflix have been ‘a real joy.’

“From transitioning the company out of DVDs into streaming, to launching our first slate of original series and documentaries, I’ve loved every moment,” Holland said, Variety reports. “I am proud of the impact and the diversity of the stories we’ve brought to audiences around the world, and to have worked with some of the most inspiring creators and executives in our business.”

Bajaria, Variety reports, is a ‘citizen of the world’ and a good choice to lead Netflix’s operations domestically and abroad. Throughout her time as VP of Local Language Originals, Netflix has worked to augment its global executive team.

“The Silicon Valley company that successfully burrowed into Hollywood is now focused on growth outside of America,” Variety reports.
