Beauty icon Sophia Chang: He told me “go back to Wuhan”

Fashion and beauty influencer Sophia Chang and her sister didn’t hesitate to confront a man she says told them to “go back to Wuhan.”

The co-founder of the women’s apparel company Womn says a patron at the Bluewater Grill in Newport Beach, CA stared at her as he headed to the bathroom and blurted “go back to Wuhan.”

Chang would later ask him why he did that and she says he replied “I don’t speak Chinese. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Sophia Chang who has 535,000 followers on Instagram posted a video on the tail end of the incident on social media. The video garnered nearly half a million views in one day.

“That’s so f*cked up,” her sister could be heard saying as he walked away. Chang who was with her sister immediately reported the incident to the waiter who said he would grab a manager.

“It was quite a day, a very eye opening experience,” she said on her Instagram Story.

Sophia Chang explained the man said twice “go back to Wuhan” and “gave us this very evil stare.” She described herself and her sister as in “complete shock.”

“Were sitting there in disbelief and my blood starts to boil because I couldn’t believe that some guy would insult us like that they deserve to be exposed.”

“I point him out, but then I see him hugging someone who works at Bluewater Grill. So I think, oh sh*t, OK. He knows people here. He’s a regular.”

Chang says the manager goes to talk to him and that’s when he walks over to them and makes the “I don’t speak Chinese” remark.

Chang sister proceeds to tell the manager if they don’t do anything about it, they would leave.

“Meanwhile, the guy is staring at us. He’s just deadly staring into me and my sisters eyes with that look like yeah, I did say it and I’m going to get away with it. I’m just like what did we do to you. It’s crazy.”

She said Bluewater handled the situation, but not with the urgency she would have liked. In the end, Bluewater Grill comped the whole meal after initially saying they would comp a few appetizers.

“He’s a racist and I wanted to call him out. I feel like there’s a lot of other Asians who go through this who don’t have a platform and they don’t have a voice and I felt like it was the right thing to do.”

She thanked the manager for being so understanding, but she went on to call the incident “jarring and pure evil.”

“This made me think about what Black people go through on a daily basis and it doesn’t even compare. And for me to be able to post about it on my platform is a privilege. It weighs really heavily on me that Black people go through this on a daily and even so much more-police brutality. Situations like this escalate on a whole another level.

“If you do experience something like this, please report it. Don’t be afraid to share it.”

Bluewater defended its action in the case, saying they acted immediately and made sure the incident didn’t escalate.

“The patron in question is no longer welcomed at Bluewater Grill

” We do not condone prejudice or racism in any form. This includes remarks made by customers which we cannot control. We take matters like this seriously and are disgusted that any guest would be subjected to an insensitive remark by another guest.”
