Indian American support for Trump weakening

President Trump greeted India Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the White House in October 2017

The Republican Hindu Coalition says its backing off from the Trump campaign because the President hasn’t met its demands on immigration, India West reports.

Four years ago, RHC founder Shalabh “Shalli” Kumar and his wife each contributed nearly $450,000 to the Trump campaign. His group also organized a rally for Trump which attracted a crowd of 8,000 mostly Indian Americans in New Jersey.

This year Kumar demanded that Trump support Deferred Action for Legal Childhood Arrivals. The proposal would allow children of H-1B visa holders to remain in the United States despite aging out of their status.

Kumar also called on the president to deal with a backlog of 500,000 Indian Americans waiting for their green cards.

To date, neither demand has been met.

“To engage the community as we did in 2016 we need certain elements on the table. We are critical to turning out the Indian American vote for Trump,” Kayo Anderson, executive director of the Republican Hindu Coalition, said to India West.

A survey released in September of 250 Indian American voters by AAPI Data found 65% of those surveyed support Joe Biden versus just 28% for Trump.

Among those 28% is businessman Danny Gaekwad.

“I saw that President Trump is wounded in the race. So I’m spending my own money to support him,” Gaekwad said, according to Scroll.

“Why Trump? Very easy. He is a friend of India. He has proved himself, he is a friend of India,” he says in a new ad.

Supporters for Trump are promising a huge voter outreach going into the final three weeks of the campaign.

“Almost every Indian-American has already been reached by the Trump campaign, and will be reached again multiple times,” said Khushboo Rawlley, an advisory board member of Indian Voices for Trump.
