Arson fire rips through Vietnamese church

Authorities are investigating a fire which gutted Vietnamese Baptist Church in Philadelphia, reports the Baptist Press.

It happened Tuesday during a second night of protest after the police shooting of a Black man.

Authorities have no suspects, although many assume this is connected to the looting and violence that followed the shooting.

However, it’s also fair to point out that some violence that has occurred during similar protests has been connected to White supremacists and other members of the alt right trying to foment racial division.

The most prominent incident involved the shooting death of a federal police officer in Oakland. Authorities arrested Air Force Staff Sgt Steven Carrillo, who they say has ties to the  far-right, anti-government “boogaloo” movement.

In Minneapolis, a man caught busting out windows during a Black Lives Matter protest has also been connected to White supremacists.

“I have no idea why they attacked our church,” Pastor Philip Pham said to the Baptist Press. “They burned it from the roof. They threw flammable chemicals on the roof and [flames] burned through the roof.”

The congregation has been meeting online since the pandemic, so no one was in the church at the time.

Pham expressed relief that three hard drives with important history and other information about church goers was not damaged.

“I saw the routers and modems and things surrounding the hard drives all burned, melted,” he said. “But that piece of hard drive, no harm. No harm at all. Just two feet above that, all melted. … That is amazing how God knows our needs and answers our prayers. He is an almighty God. He granted our prayer.”
