Tua Tagovailoa threw for one touchdown in an easy victory for the Miami Dolphins over the Los Angeles Rams, 28 – 17, Sunday.
It was the Samoan American’s first NFL start of his young career. The fifth overall pick in the NFL got the nod over veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, improving the Dolphin’s record to 4-3.
He was aided by a defense and special teams which combined for two touchdowns and handing the ball to Tagovailoa on the one for a third TD, according to the Sporting News.
The Dolphins got off to an early lead and the coaches decided to turn Tagovailoa into a caretaker. He only threw 22 passes for 93 yards and averaged just four yards per catch on 12 completions.
“I don’t think I played to the standard that this offense is capable of… Thank God we’ve got a good defense,” he told reporters, according to TDA.
His first touchdown came at the end of the first quarter on a three yard pass to DeVante Parker up the middle.
The Miami Herald reports his first completion went for eight yards to Preston Williams for a first down.
