Police in Portland, Oregon arrested a neighbor in the fatal stabbing of Mathew Choi, the co-owner of Choi’s Kimchee, reports the Oregonian.
Allen Coe, 30, faces charges of first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, unlawful use of a weapon, identity theft and first-degree burglary.
KOIN reports that according to court documents, Choi and his girlfriend had a small gathering in his apartment. The two fell asleep with Choi on the couch and his girlfriend in his bedroom. She awoke after hearing noises in the apartment and alerted Choi. While Choi investigated, authorities say Coe entered the bedroom and tried to stab Choi’s girlfriend. Court records indicate Choi intervened, the men fell to the ground and his girlfriend discovered Choi with multiple stab wounds as Coe exited the apartment.
Police say while being interrogated, Coe spit on the ground. That saliva is now being used as DNA evidence against him.
The Oregonian reports Coe had been arrested just days after the murder on suspicion of auto theft. Authorities released him on enhanced supervision while the charges were pending. He had no previous criminal convictions.
It’s has not been revealed what lead police to suspect Coe as the killer.
“We sincerely want to thank the Portland Police and supporting agencies for their diligent efforts in capturing this suspect,” Choi’s family said in a statement. “Though it will never fill the hole in our hearts and in this community, we do pray for justice and peace that transcends all understanding. We have been so moved by the love and support, please know that words cannot express how thankful we are for the memories and stories that have been shared with us. We will never understand why this happened, but still believe there is good in this world and you are all examples of that. This tragedy will not define us, but instead inspire us to live to the fullest and never take each day for granted.
