President-elect Joe Biden has nominated Katherine Tai to serve as U.S. Trade Representative, CBS News reports.
Tai currently serves as the trade counsel for the House Ways and Means Committee, according to CNBC. She served in the office of the U.S. Trade Representative during the Obama administration and worked on China trade enforcement, CBS News reports.
Biden and his team praised Tai’s experience in a statement they made about her nomination, according to CNBC.
“Her deep experience will allow the Biden-Harris administration to hit the ground running on trade, and harness the power of our trading relationships to help the U.S. dig out of the COVID-induced economic crisis and pursue the President-elect’s vision of a pro-American worker trade strategy,” the Biden transition team wrote.
Tai would be the first Asian American woman to hold the job, as well as the first woman of color. She is the second Asian American to be nominated to serve in the Biden cabinet.
Tai’s nomination comes just days after top Asian American lawmakers held a video call with Biden and his team to ask for greater Asian American and Pacific Islander representation in Biden’s administration.
