Indian American sues CNN for $50 million, alleges defamation

The highest-ranking Indian American in the Pentagon is suing CNN for $50 million for defamation, NDTV reports.

Kash Patel, current Chief of Staff to the Acting U.S. Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller, alleges that CNN and its top reporters published defamatory statements about him in articles from Nov. 24 to Dec. 4. According to NDTV, Patel filed the lawsuit in a Virginia court Friday.

“..publication of the defamatory statements is part of a general pattern of retaliation and discrimination against Kash… a larger conspiracy undertaken between 2018 and the present to discredit Kash through the publication of false statements and the promotion of unfounded left-wing political narratives,” Patel’s attorney, Steven S. Biss, said.

Patel, a former aide to Californian Republican Rep. Devin Nunes, was ‘connected to efforts to spread conspiracy theories about Joe Biden,’ CNN reports in a Nov. 24 article.

“The House impeachment inquiry uncovered evidence connecting Patel… to the diplomatic back channel led by Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, and the efforts to spread conspiracy theories about Joe Biden and coerce Ukraine into announcing an investigation of the former vice president,” the article reports. “He has also worked to discredit Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.”

Patel was recently appointed Pentagon chief of staff. According to NBC, Patel, a ‘Trump loyalist,’ has taken an uncooperative stance with President-elect Joe Biden’s transition team, restricting the team’s access to Pentagon officials.

“He told everybody we’re not going to cooperate with the transition team,” a former official said, NBC reports.

“This has been more politicized than previous transitions,” another official said, NBC reports. “Patel is controlling the information flow.”
