Two pedestrians were killed in a New Year’s Eve hit-and-run in San Francisco. The man who allegedly hit the two pedestrians was a parolee who had already violated his parole, CBS San Francisco reports.
The pedestrians, two women, were struck by a stolen vehicle in the city’s South of Market neighborhood around 4 p.m., according to NBC Bay Area. One woman died at the scene and the other was transferred to a nearby hospital where she died.
On Friday, police identified the driver as 45-year-old Troy McAllister who was on parole for robbery, CBS San Francisco reports. Rachel Marshall, an assistant San Francisco district attorney and spokesperson for D.A. Chesa Boudin’s office, said that McAllister had been arrested twice already in the past two months.
He was not placed in jail after either arrest.
“There can be no question, every justice agency involved in this — including our office — must take responsibility for preventing tragedies like this from happening,” Marshall’s DA statement said. “We are carefully reviewing what happened and thinking critically about what could have been done differently in this case.”
One of the victims has been identified as Hanako (Hana) Abe. She had moved to San Francisco last year to work for JLL Real Estate.
Her mother, Hiroko Abe, wants justice for her daughter’s death.
“The whole family has a heart that is torn by sadness,” Hiroko Abe who communicated through Twitter, according to CBS San Francisco.
“You couldn’t find such a beloved daughter all over the world. She was our pride.”
A Go Fund Me has been set up for Hana’s family.
