Rep. Pramila Jayapal tested positive for Covid-19 Monday, days after being in a room of colleagues who refused to wear a facemask during the congressional siege.
The chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus tweeted about her test results early Tuesday and squarely placing the blame on the Republicans who refused a facemask even when offered one.
She is the second Congressional rep to test positive. On Monday, Jayapal expressed her dismay after Rep Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ) announced she had contacted the coronavirus.
“Too many Republicans have refused to take this pandemic and virus seriously, and in doing so, they endanger everyone around them,” Jayapal said in a statement. “Only hours after President Trump incited a deadly assault on our Capitol, our country, and our democracy, many Republicans still refused to take the bare minimum COVID-19 precaution and simply wear a damn mask in a crowded room during a pandemic — creating a superspreader event on top of a domestic terrorist attack.”
Prayapal told The Cut on Thursday, the day after the riot, that she would be quarantining.
“I am convinced that where we ended up, in the secured room — where there were over 100 people and many were Republicans not wearing masks — was a superspreader event,” she said to the Cut.
According to KING5, Prayapal is asking that every lawmakers who refused to wear a mask be fined and removed from the Congressional floor.
The Huff Post reports that the attending physician to Congress has advised Capital lawmakers and staff to get tested because many were forced to hide next to each other in an enclosed room.
