Out of 700+ contestants, Sikh American Serene Singh secured the coveted National Miss-American Miss pageant title, Woodmen Edition reports.

She’s still pinching herself.

“I woke up realizing my dream of many years is now my reality,” Singh told the Woodsmen Edition. “I have so many exciting plans and goals for this year to work on behalf of girls and women across the country amidst a global pandemic and I am 100% prepared to dedicate my whole self to lending my voice to causes that matter most to me.”

She is the first South Asian contestant to ever place Top 5 in the Miss division of the pageant, according to PAGEANTCircle.

Singh has also found much success outside of the world of beauty pageants. As a Rhodes Scholar, Truman Scholar and Fulbright recipient, Singh is a doctoral candidate at the University of Oxford, where she is also the youngest graduate from the renowned Blavatnik School of Government with a Master’s degree in Public Policy, India West reports.

Singh attributes much of her success to her Sikh identity. “My Sikh identity is probably one of the most important aspects of who I am,” she said. Sewa, a concept within the Skih faith that describes selfless service, aligns with her dedication to helping others.

Her Harry S. Truman scholarship, awarded to students who embody the notion of public service, was based upon her goal to focus on “self-esteem of girls and women, girls’ education, diversity and representation, and women’s rights.” Singh’s nonprofit The Serenity Project, founded in 2016, works towards supporting women both personally and professionally through various programs and projects.

“I know girls and women across this country and the globe do not have access to the same opportunities I have had in my life to be where I am today. That very notion is what motivates me to give what I have been given in meaningful and tangible ways constantly in life,” she said.
