Actors put up $25K award in Oakland Chinatown attack

Actors Daniel Dae Kim and Daniel Wu this morning put up a $25,000 reward in the case of a 91-year-old man attacked in Oakland Chinatown.

Dion Lim of ABC7 News announced the award this morning after talking to Wu.

Police throughout the San Francisco Bay Area issued urgent warnings this week about a surge in attacks on Asian seniors.

In the latest incident revealed Thursday, a young man approaches a 91-year-old man from behind and shoves him into the ground. The senior narrowly missed hitting a metal bicycle rack as his body slams into the sidewalk.

“This is something we must change and change it now,” said Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce president Carl Chan to CBS5.

Police believe the same suspect didn’t stop there.

“The suspect then approached a 60-year-old man and 55-year-old woman from behind that were also walking in the 800 block of Harrison Street,” police said to ABC7 News. “The suspect pushed both victims to the ground, resulting in the woman losing consciousness. The man also suffered injury. Both victims were treated at a local hospital for their injuries.”

“I want to start by apologizing to the victims of these heinous crimes,” said Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf who blamed recent police budget cuts approved by the city council.

These attacks follows the death of an 84-year-old Thai man in San Francisco this last weekend. A teen is under arrest after police say he pushed that man to the ground.

On Wednesday in San Jose, an unidentified suspect robbed Kathy Duong’s mother outside a supermarket.

“We’re seeing countless elders in the Asian American community being targeted, attacked and robbed throughout the Bay Area,” she said to CBS5.

Police warned of a surge in crime during the Lunar New Year and urged vigilance.

  1. What cowards. What in their brains and hearts allow them to make this choice? Hate? And why? I hope when they catch these youths they ask why and share that with the public.
