Last week an elementary school worker was beaten while waiting at a bus stop in Rosemead, California, ABC 7 reports.

Matthew Leung was waiting at a bus stop near Rosemead Boulevard and Marshall street. He had a short conversation with a man on a bike about the bus stop number.

A few minutes later, the man on the bike returned. He took Leung’s walking stick and began beating him with it.

A GoFundMe page set up for Leung detailed the extent of his injuries. The 51-year-old suffered a concussion and received stitches for a head wound. He lost a part of his finger as he tried to shield his face from his attacker.

Leung, who was left permanently handicapped after a freak bus accident as a young adult, currently works as a paraprofessional at Gates Elementary school. His hours have been cut drastically due to public school budget cuts. The GoFundMe was set up to help pay for his medical bills.

Diane Yokoyama, a teacher at Gates Street Elementary School, five others set up the GoFundMe campaign, which has raised more than $14,000 as of Wednesday evening.

“This violence should never happen. It should never occur. I mean it was unprovoked. He was just sitting on a bus stop,” Yokohama said.

The campaign’s page describes Leung as “the kindest and hardworking person who will go out of his way to help the students and our school community.”

  1. I wish folks would identify the ethnicity of the assailant. We need to know as internet posts seem like to identify all Non Asians. And also know if there is a racial factor involved
