Asian run-businesses in California have received an anonymous letter filled with racist comments and Asian slurs, LAist reports.

The Riverside Police Department says a nail salon in Riverside, a nail salon in Healdsburg and another Asian-run business in Yucaipa have both received what appears to the same letter.

The letter is addressed “TO ALL ASIAN” and opens by calling Asian people slurs and names based on stereotypes. It asked the recipients to go back to where they came from.

“MOST OF YOUR CUSTOMERS FEEL THIS WAY” the letter said. “THEY JUST HAVE TO PRETEND TO LIKE YOU! BUT NOONE CAN STAND HOW UGLY, SMELLY AND DISGUSTING YOU ARE!!!”

The owner of the Riverside nail salon, Top 10 nails said the letter hurt her deeply.

“It hurts,” the nail salon owner, who asked KTLA to refer to her as Jackie to protect her identity, told the news station. “It hurts really deep because I’m also a veteran. I served my country, and I’m willing to die for it. Now they’re telling me to go home. This is my home.”

Riverside police believe the letter was likely sent to more than just three businesses. They are asking anyone else who has received the same letter to contact the police.

“That way we can kind of have a grasp on how far this has gone, how much reach this person was trying to make,” Riverside Police Department Officer Ryan Railsback said, according to LAist.

Vicky Mai, the owner of the nail salon in Healdsburg told LAist the letter shocked her. She worried it would hurt her business but has been encouraged by the response from her community.

“The local people are so wonderful here,” Mai said. “They make appointments, and they call me and they send in an email. I’ve got a lot of support.”
