A woman shoved Chinese American City Council candidate Susan Lee down a subway staircase in Manhattan last week, the New York Post reports. Lee suffered a sprained ankle after managing to catch her balance.
“I was holding on to the rail really tightly and I had my other hand in front of my face,” she recalled.
Lee caught sight of the woman right before the attack and knew immediately that something was off. “You know she has this mischievous look on her face, and I was just thinking like, ‘Oh gosh, this isn’t good,’” she said.
Lee told the New York Post that she was uncertain whether she was attacked because of her race or because she was alone and considered an easy target.
It took several days and much urging from her friends before Lee felt comfortable enough to report the incident to the police. Since then, she has been scared of taking public transportation.
“Now I’m always walking,” Lee said.
