President Joe Biden on Wednesday allowed Trump’s H-1B visa ban to expire.
This means those whose applications were frozen due to the ban can now reapply. This is especially good news for those from India and China-two countries which overwhelmingly make up the vast majority of applicants.
Two-thirds of those come from India alone, according to the American Bazaar.
Trump issued the order saying he wanted to protect American jobs. However, many high tech firms opposed the order saying the talent pool in America is not sufficient to meet the demand.
CNet reports that three-quarters of the 85,000 H-1B visas each year go to technology jobs.
Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) unsuccessfully had urged the president to extend the ban.
“With millions of struggling Americans out of work – and millions more desperate to make ends meet – now is not the time to open the floodgates to thousands of foreign workers competing with American workers for scarce jobs and resources,” he wrote.
In February, Biden also lifted Trump’s ban on Green cards.
