The head of the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce is recovering this morning after being attacked in Downtown Oakland, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.
Chan told the Chronicle someone came from behind and beat him on the head after saying a derogatory word. He managed to take a picture of the suspect and provide a description to police which officers credit for leading to an arrest.
The identity of the suspect has not been released. Chan has been outspoken calling for more police protection in Chinatown, especially of seniors, KTVU reports.
“If I didn’t stand up, I’m 100 percent sure he would have kicked me and it would have been devastating,” said Chan to ABC7’s Dion Lim.
The injuries he sustained are not serious.
