South Asian American communities in Long Island are working together with Nassau County officials to send aid to India during the third wave of the pandemic, ABC7 reports.

The COVID-19 virus has taken a tremendous toll on India in recent weeks. On Monday that India reported more than 366,000 new infections and 3,754 new deaths.

“What is needed is ventilators, BIPAP machines, ventilators and PPE,” Dr. Raj Bhayani of the Federation of Indian Physicians Associations, told CBS New York.

Without the necessary medical infrastructure, India is faced with overcrowded hospitals, a lack of medical supplies, PPE and ventilators. The Federation of Indian Physicians is chartering a plane to deliver 5,500 oxygen concentrators this weekend, according to CBS New York.

“We may be far away from our country, but together we just want to say that we do care and we will do our best to help out India,” Shashi Malik from India Association of Long Island said in an interview with ABC 7.

There is room on the plane for other supplies. Hospitals, municipalities and companies are being urged to send what is not being used. Local leaders have suggested if people want to donate supplies contact a local South Asian prayer or community group.

They recommend contacting international organizations such as: UNICEF, United Way, National Association of Indians in America, FIPA, Gujrati Samaj, Arya Samaj of Long Island, Rajasthan Medical Association of Indians in America, Indian American Forum, Friends for Good Health, India Association of Long Island, Nargis Dutt Foundation, IDPUSA, Rotary Hicksville South, Rotary Jericho Sunrise, Asamai Temple, Arya Samaj of Long Island, AAPIQLI, Plainview Gurudwara, Sai Mandir Hicksville, Gurudwara Shaheeda Levittown
