An Asian American man who was pushed onto the subway track in New York owes his life to a quick reacting train operator, reports the New York Post.
Tobin Madathil managed to stop his train 30 feet from the man at the Queens subway station earlier this week.
“Right when I was coming into the station people were waving at me, and that’s when I immediately placed the train into emergency mode,” Madathil, 29, said to the Post.
Madathil spoke to the Kerala Cultural Association of North America about what happened.
“I’ve been shaking because this is the first time this has happened to me,” he said in an interview posted on Facebook. “As a train operator, you have that fear someone may jump in front of your train. I was shocked when I saw it.”
Madathil called what happened “a miracle” and says he is grateful the man is still alive.
Paramedics took the victim to the hospital with a cut on his forehead. It is being investigated as a possible hate crime.
