Suspect Who Punched Asian Woman Charged With Hate Crime

Police have charged the man suspected of punching an Asian woman in New York City’s Chinatown with assault as a hate crime, CBS New York reports.

Camera footage shows the suspect, 48-year-old Alexander Wright, punch a 55-year-old Asian woman Monday outside a restaurant on Bayard Street. Wright allegedly punches her in the face as she walks past him.

The woman falls to the ground after she is punched and appears to be unconscious. Several people approach her to see if she’s alright.

Police arrested Wright a block away from the assault. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital for a psychological evaluation, NBC News reports. It is unclear if Wright has an attorney to represent him.

The woman was taken to New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital and is in stable condition.
