In a battle between new versus old media and contemporary against prehistoric values, a war is taking place publicly over what’s funny and what’s considered offensive and racist.
It pits Late Late Show host James Corden against a relatively unknown young Filipina and Chinese woman who has 95,000 followers on Instagram and another 1800 on TikTok, Kim Saira.
The young woman has produced a series of videos on TikTok ridiculing an on- going segment on Corden’s show which mocks the foods of various ethnic communities for the sake of getting laughs.
To Saira, it’s not something to laugh at-those foods are part of who she is. She posted her first video on TikTok speaking about the Spill Your Guts segment just four days ago. It’s generated 2.4 million views.
“They’re calling Asian food disgusting on live TV. Huh. This is literally racist. This is so disrespectful WTF,” she wrote.
She’s followed up with five more videos on the same topic which have generated another 300,000 views.
Her goal is to get Corden to discontinue his segment. She is not interested in getting him fired, pointing out he spoke out against fat shaming a year ago and urged him to do the right thing with his Spill your guts segment.
The movement has gotten the attention of various media, including The Independent out of Great Britain.
Yet this isn’t the first time this has come up. Similar sentiments surfaced in 2018 in a commentary on Inkstone News from Andrew Sun.
So far Corden and CBS have not responded. AsAmNews reached out to both. When they do, we’ll let you know.
