Asian American civil rights groups in California Tuesday staged a Twitter storm to pressure California Gov. Gavin Newsom to support spending $200 million to combat anti-Asian hate.
Using the hashtag #APIEquityBudget, they held the protest on social media for one hour beginning at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Earlier that day, the state legislature passed a placeholder budget that included $200 million to stop the spread of racism and violence against Asian Americans.
“The question is whether the Governor will support the measure or try to remove it as part of the final budget negotiations with the legislature,” Andy Wong, director of advocacy at Chinese for Action, told AsAmNews in an email. “We’re told the Governor isn’t ready to lend his support just yet, which is why we are trying to pressure him to ultimately adopt.”
The governor is required to sign the budget by June 30, just two weeks away.
