An Asian man was carjacked after dropping his wife off at work in San Francisco Friday morning, ABC 7 reports.

The 32-year-old, who asked ABC 7 not to use his name or show his face, was sitting in his car outside his home in the San Francisco’s Sunset district. A man approached him with a gun and told him to get in the passenger’s seat.

The man drove the victim around San Francisco, demanding the victim’s cell phone, credit cards and jewelry. The victim said the man threatened to kill him.

Fearing for his life, the victim jumped out of the car, traveling at 30 miles per hour. He sustained injuries but escaped with his life. He sustained several injuries.

“I had no choice, I had no choice, If I don’t do anything maybe I will die. He will kill me,” the victim told ABC 7.

The victim also said he believed the attack was random. He said criminals may, however, be targeting the Sunset district because of the number of Asian Americans that live there.

Attacks on Asian Americans have risen since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. A few weeks ago, an Asian UPS delivery driver was beaten in San Francisco, CBS San Francisco reports. Days before the carjacking, a 94-year-old Asian woman was stabbed multiple times, Kron4 reports.

Police recovered the victim’s Toyota but have not made any arrests.

The victim and his family have created a GoFundMe page to help cover medical expenses and lost wages.
