Asian Americans among missing in building collapse

Families of the more than 150 people missing in the Miami Building collapse are hoping for a miracle, while realizing their hopes grow dimmer with each passing day.

Among those missing are Vishal Patel, 42, his wife Bhavna, 38 and 1-year-old daughter, Aishani.

“We’re starting to prepare for the negative possibility, especially as the hours pass, but at the end of the day our family is very hopeful,’ relative Sarina Patel said to ABC7 News. “I just keep praying they have found a pocket somewhere where they were able to seek shelter and just waiting to be found.”

Sarina is desperate for any sign that her loved ones are still alive. She’s texted and called, hoping for any kind of response.

“As time passed it became scarier. You just kind of start to understand like they’re somewhere in that rubble.”

Bettina Odias is also hoping for the best, but preparing for the worse. Her aunt and Uncle Maria and Claudio Bonnefoy lived in the Champlain Tower South.

Bettina calls her aunt her second mother.

“When I passed by her apartment, I screamed and cried,” Bettina told ABC News.

Those who experience in rescues encourage families not to give up hope. They say it’s possible to survive for a week to ten days beneath the crush of debris in a pocket of air as they wait for rescuers to find them.
