Anti-Asian Hate Crimes Spike 395 Percent in NYC

In the past year, New York City saw a 395 percent increase in anti-Asian hate crimes, Newsweek reports.

The New York City Police Department published city-wide crime statistics for June 2021 and compared the numbers to June 2020. There was an overall increase in hate crimes. In 2020, the city saw 269 hate crimes. This year 320, hate crimes were reported.

Anti-Asian hate crimes saw the biggest increase with a 395 percent spike in reported hate crimes. In June 2020, there were only 21 reported anti-Asian crimes so far. As of July 2021, there have now been 104.

There was a 95 percent increase in anti-Black hate crimes, a 200 percent increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes and a 356 percent increase in hate crimes having to do with sexual orientation. The full report can be read here.

The numbers may be even greater. According to a report by CNN, hate crimes often go underreported.
