Hayward Police in the San Francisco Bay Area have arrested a suspect in connection with an assault on an elderly Asian man.
The suspect has been identified as 25-year-old Salvador Dominguez Jr, according to a press release.
The assault took place at a Chevron Gas Station near the Southland Mall on July 5. Surveillance footage shows the suspect slapping the elderly Asian man in the face. Witnesses say the suspect repeatedly asked the man if he was Asian.
The victim left the scene before police arrived. One witness said the victim came to the gas station regularly. Police have located the victim in addition to Dominguez.
The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged Dominguez in this case with assault, inciting a fight, and a hate crime enhancement.
