Asian Am Customer attacked inside Chipotle in SF Bay Area

By Louis Chan, AsAmNews National Correspondent

Police in Union City southeast of San Francisco say an unidentified man faces robbery and potential battery charges after attacking a customer inside the fast food Mexican restaurant, Chipotle.

“The suspect stole the victim’s speaker inside the store. After they got into a fight, the suspect ran off with it,” Lt. Paul Kanazeh told AsAmNews.

Kanazeh says an argument ensued after the suspect cut in front of line. According to the victim’s sister, the suspect called her brother a “little dick.”

She said her brother paid for his food and sat down to eat, but the suspect continued the argument as he continuously exited and reentered the store. Eventually, she said the suspect erupted and the confrontation turned into a physical assault.

“The guy tackled my brother,” said the sister who goes by the handle of Jazzminarius on Instagram. “He was hitting my brother, punching him in the face and the head. The guy was a lot bigger than my brother.”

Photos of her brother show him with numerous scratches and bruises. He was treated at the hospital, but did not sustain any serious injuries.

The sister identified herself as Jasmine Vu and her brother as Navarone Vu. She said she is Filipino American and a proud member of the AAPI community. She only verbally said the names, so we may not have the spellings correct.

Police declined to name the victim or to describe the suspect until they have an opportunity to fully investigate. Kanazeh says Chipotle is cooperating with the investigation.

However, Jasmine accused Chipotle of lacking any empathy for her brother and not doing enough to prevent the confrontation. She did not respond to efforts by AsAmNews to reach out to her.

“I feel that there’s a stereotype that we’re tired and timid When this stuff happens, that’s when elders get beat. Our aunties are getting robbed in the middle of the street. I’m loud. I’m going to say something,” she said on Instagram.

AsAmNews attempted to reach out to her, but she has not yet responded.

A manager contacted by AsAmNews identified herself only as Azana.

“We’re not going to comment on what happened,” she said. “I wasn’t there that day. I can’t tell you what happened.”

AsAmNews also contacted Chipotle’s corporate headquarters in Newport Beach, CA, but no one returned our email.

Union City police said they would fully investigate the case.

“There is nothing to substantiate a hate crime,” Kanazeh said.
