A man who attempted to stop a robbery in progress in Oakland Chinatown says he doesn’t regret his actions.
As CBS5 reports, two men jumped out of a car and grabbed the purses of two women in broad daylight on Saturday.
A man who identified himself only as Mr Chan told ABC7 News exclusively that he struggled to get his girlfriend’s purse back and got pistol whipped.
“I reacted immediately to try to get them off her,” he said.
A Good Samaritan then joined in the struggle and got shot in the armpit and thigh. He hopes to be released from the hospital today.
Chan says if it wasn’t for that man, he thinks he might be dead.
“I don’t regret what I did (but) I don’t recommend if this happened to other people to get involved in that way,” Chan said. “You don’t know who brought guns or if they have knives.”
Chan says the men had their guns hidden in their pants.
Oakland’s Chinatown has seen a rash of crime since the pandemic. Those in the neighborhood told CBS5 they fear for their safety despite an added police presence.
“You’d think that wouldn’t happen. No one would be stupid enough to do it in front of the cops,” Bary Szeto said. “There’s no law and order. We’re going back to the wild, wild, west.”
Chinatown business owner Diane Trinh says the violent crime is scaring customers away.
“It’s a little crazy a lot right now and the people … crazy,” she said.

The violent criminals who chose to make Asians their victims are not going to stop. They haven’t any respect for themselves and certainly not for the Asian citizens that they chose to victimize. The politicians from the top still have their eyes wide shut and refuse to recognize their mistakes in handling and stopping violent criminals. The politicians are only interested in the votes that they want and that means refusing to make the hard decisions that come with being a true leader that produces results. They are suppose ensure a safer society but instead are enabling these criminal actions. The leaders are grossly remiss in their promises to the law-abiding citizens of the Asian communities.
