Some 1.2 million people, mostly from India, are waiting for green cards to gain permanent residence in the U.S., reports Times of India.
Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) is urging his colleagues to join him in writing House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to ask them to fix the green card backlog in any budget reconciliation bill.
Many immigrant groups are now taking to social media to back the idea.
“It is our sincerely held belief that any package that includes immigrant reforms must address this backlog not only as a matter of fairness but as a central component of our long term strategy for economic prosperity and global competitiveness,” Krisnamoorthi wrote together with Kathy Manning and Deborah Ross, reported the American Bazaar.
“Right now, no more than seven percent of employment-based green cards are available to individuals from a single country, which has created a decades-long backlog for would-be immigrants from India and China.”
