Rep Grace Meng calls out Daily Mail for photo mistake

In reporting on an altercation between an Asian American father and a White couple, the Daily Mail mistakenly used a photo of Congresswoman Grace Meng and her family, Sunnyside Post reports.

Last week, the Daily Mail reported, “42-year-old Michael Kim was walking back from a hike on Fire Island, New York, with his two sons, ages nine and five, when he claims he was harassed by a couple because he scolded his sons for play fighting and almost getting hit by a truck.”

Kim felt intimidated by the strangers’ approach and filmed the couple’s harassing comments like, “This isn’t China,” and, “Why are you here?” The video has since gone viral on TikTok.

However, when referring to Kim’s family, Daily Mail used a photo of Rep. Grace Meng’s family, leading Meng to respond with, “Dude—wrong Asian American family.”

Her tweet garnered dozens of supportive replies. Many questioned the common stereotype that all Asians looked alike, and others pointed out the illogical pairing of a story about a single dad with a photo of a two-parent family.

Congresswoman Grace Meng represents the Sixth District in New York, including Queens. She is the first and only Asian American congressperson from New York and is an outspoken advocate for AAPI and other underrepresented communities.
