Any concerns Hollywood executive had that the public wouldn’t go for an Asian-superhero with a predominantly Asian cast have proven misguided.
Variety reports Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings generated $71 million at the domestic box office its opening weekend.
It’s now on track to top $80 million over the four day Labor Day weekend. That’s on top of the $56 million box office overseas, bringing its worldwide total to $139.7 million.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Shang-Chi will come in just behind another Marvel movie, Black Widow, as the second highest grossing movie on opening weekend in the pandemic era.
If Shang-Chi can keep up the momentum, it could potentially surpass Black Widow overall as ticket sales plummeted for Black Widow in subsequent weeks.
To date, Black Widow which came out in July has hit $371.3 million in domestic sales.
