Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi responded to criticism that her show will film in an anti-abortion state by announcing she will raise money for abortion and voting rights.
The cooking competition program faced much backlash from fans after announcing earlier this week it would be filming in Houston for Season 19.
The U.S. Supreme Court recently upheld a Texas law that would ban abortions after the first six weeks of pregnancy.
“Very poor decision to choose TX right now,” wrote a fan on Facebook. “Production should be halted and moved elsewhere.”
“Disappointing Top Chef would give any money to Texas,” said another.
One fan said she would stop watching the show.
“I’m surprised you chose Texas with its horrible anti woman laws as a staging ground for your show. Top Chef is my favorite TV show, but I’m going to have to pass this season.”
Lakshmi immediately defended the decision to film in the state, while stating her opposition to the law.
Eater reports Lakshmi will hold fundraisers for Fund Texas Choice, and Jane’s Due Process, among others.
Today reports all money raised will be split between 10 different organizations equally.
