Acting Boston Mayor Kim Janey on Saturday announced her support for City Councilor Michelle Wu to replace her, reports the Boston Herald.
Janey went in the weeks before the primary as the front runner to finishing in fourth behind Wu and second place finisher, City Councilor Annissa Essaibi-George.
“The challenges facing Boston today demand strong leadership. Over the last six months, I’ve worked with residents across our city to address the Covid-19 pandemic, keep people in their homes, get our children back to school and make our neighborhoods safer. We can’t let that work go in vain, which is why I am endorsing Michelle Wu for Mayor,” said Janey Saturday, according to CBS4.
Janey’s endorsement could help Wu gain Black votes, according to the Herald. Neither Wu nor Essaibi-George did well with that community. Janey made her endorsement in her own district, an historically Black neighborhood.
“The black vote is very important to this election and it’s … important to the future of Boston. That is why we cannot sit this out, we cannot sit back and try to go back to all of the inequities that impact Black and brown people in our city.”
Wu finished first in the primary with 33% of the vote to Essaibi-George’s 22.5%.
