Organizers Want to Rebrand Lee County, Florida, to Bruce Lee County

A Florida-based arts organization wants to rebrand Lee County, Florida, to Bruce Lee County, NBC News reports.

Artsemble Underground launched a Change.org petition calling for a rebrand of the county named after Confederate general Robert E Lee.

“I’m not a fan of living in Robert E. Lee County. It doesn’t make me proud,” Brian Weaver, owner of the Florida-based organization Artsemble Underground, told NBC News.

Artsemble Underground’s petition is not the only petition calling for a rebrand of Lee County. There is currently another Change.org petition with 8,400 signatures calling for the county to be renamed “Calusa County.”

Part of the problem with changing the names of counties, the Artsemble Underground petition points out, is the cost involved. The organization believes that rebranding to “Bruce Lee County” instead of changing the county’s name will save money.

The arts organization chose Bruce Lee because he is “the most influential martial artist of all time and a pop culture icon of the 20th century.”

Lee also helped pave the way for Asians in Hollywood. In an unearthed interview from 1997, Jackie Chan spoke about how Lee helped him get paid more, South China Morning Post reports.

“Bruce was great, because he got me even more money by telling the stunt coordinator it was a dangerous stunt – but it wasn’t a dangerous stunt. He was just trying to help me get paid more, and that made me so happy,” Chan said in the interview.

The petition acknowledged that his contributions to the Asian community also made Bruce a good candidate for the rebrand.

“He is credited with helping to change the way Asians were presented in American films,” the petition reads.
