What’s missing from the above picture of a crowd of media in Central Park to cover a news conference from Michael Bloomberg?
You don’t see a lot of people of color, particularly Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders among the dozens of reporters, photographers & producers.
AsAmNews hopes to help remedy that by nurturing and encouraging Asian American and Pacific Islander students to pursue careers in journalism and new media.
It’s important that AAPI perspectives are part of the discussion in newsrooms across the country when decisions are made of what to cover. Only when newsrooms are truly diverse will this become reality.
For almost nine years, AsAmNews has hosted interns from across the country, mentoring and advising them on how to improve their craft.
The AsAmNews Scholarship is intended to encourage students, who for economic reasons, cannot afford to accept an unpaid internship, to apply.
The deadline to apply has been extended one week to Tuesday, November 2.
AsAmNews has internships available in reporting, social media, marketing, photography/videography. Interns work a minimum of 7 hours a week for 15 weeks. Scholarship winners will receive $1500 at the successful conclusion of their internship. You can find more information here. Applications can be found here. If you have questions, you may email scholarship at asamnews dot com.
Once again, the deadline is Tuesday, November 2.
AsAmNews has Asian America in its heart. We’re an all-volunteer effort of dedicated staff and interns. Check out our new Instagram account. Go to our Twitter feed and Facebook page for more content. Please consider interning, joining our staff, or submitting a story or making a contribution.
