Bay Area Photographer Robbed at Gunpoint Petitioning for Better Security

A Bay Area photographer was robbed at gunpoint outside of his home after taking pictures of the Golden Gate bridge, ABC 7 reports.

Asian American hobby photographer Louis was photographing the evening fog enveloping the Golden Gate bridge in September. He told ABC 7 he noticed two men looking at him but didn’t think much of it.

After taking some photos, Louis dropped his friend off at Union City and drove to his home in Fremont. He didn’t realize that the men watching him at the bridge had followed him.

He saw men approach his car. His home security camera footage and camera footage from his Tesla show the men smash a windshield. One man can be seen stealing a camera bag.

Louis attempts to chase the men, who leave in a getaway vehicle, in his Tesla. He crashes into the getaway vehicle and is confronted at gunpoint.

“The guy has a gun pointing in my face,” Louis told ABC 7. “He walks around my car and that’s when I hear the gunshot go off.”

Other creatives in the Bay Area have also had equipment stolen. When Filipino Australian singer Clinton Kane toured in San Francisco in October, robbers with guns stole $30,000 of camera equipment from their van, CBS San Francisco reports.

Photographers are asking camera manufacturers to help them protect their gear. Louis has started a Change.org petition asking the manufacturers to equip their cameras with anti-theft protective systems.
