On Monday, Assemblymember David Chiu became San Francisco’s first Asian American city attorney, NBC Bay Area reports. Chiu replaced Dennis Herrera, who served as city attorney for over two decades.
Over 200 people attended Chiu’s swearing-in ceremony on Monday at City Hall, The San Francisco Chronicle reports.
“I am excited and inspired to lead such a reputable office with an impressive group of legal minds,” Chiu said in a statement, according to NBC Bay Area. “Together, we will use the power of the law to stand up for San Franciscans and confront our city’s greatest challenges.”
Chiu previously represented California’s 17th State Assembly district, the eastern part of San Francisco. He is a longtime advocate for the civil rights of women, immigrants and LGBTQ+ Californians. Many people in San Francisco believe his advocacy makes him the right man for the job.
“David’s experience fighting for San Francisco’s most vulnerable communities and advocating for equitable and just policies makes him the right person for this position,” San Francisco Mayor London Breed said in a statement.
