Tears flowed outside the Alameda County administrative building for Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan.
Chan died hours after being struck by a car Wednesday while walking her dog in Alameda.
“We always remember Wilma and love her,” said Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce president Carl Chan said to ABC7 News.
“Her legacy is going to be tremendous,” Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley said to NBC Bay Area. “It’s going to be significant, around childcare, working to provide services to vulnerable and poor populations.”
Chan served two stints on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. She became the first Asian American elected to the Board in 1994 before being elected to the State Assembly and then later returning to the Board in 2010.
No information has been released about the driver of the vehicle that struck Chan. Criminal charges have not been ruled out.
“We are looking at everything in this case and it is still open. It would be inappropriate and too early for me to comment on that,” Chief Joshi said to KRON4.
Investigators hope to scour surveillance video that may have captured the accident.
“It tells a story. It helps either refute information that’s out there or supports information that is out there. I can tell you that I am saddened by the tragic loss of Supervisor Chan. She made so many contributions and touched so many lives during her 30-years of public service. Like many others in our community, the Alameda Police Department is mourning the loss of Miss Chan,” Chief Joshi responded.
