A community came together to mourn the death of two-year-old Jasper Wu who died after being hit by a stray bullet in the gunfire between the occupants of two vehicles.
“It’s just so devastating, so sad,” said neighbor Lucy Tovar in Fremont, CA to ABC7 News. “I just can’t believe it. I see the family in front of the house with kids and their mom.”
The tragedy happened Saturday in Oakland at around 2 in the afternoon.
“It’s just something that’s heartbreaking,” the Mercury News quoted Fremont Mayor Lily Mei as saying.
No information about the suspects has been released, but CBS5 reports one of the suspect vehicles is a dark color Chrysler 300.
The family is too devastated to talk publicly about Jasper’s death, but they urged the suspects to turn themselves in.
“Please surrender,” they said off-camera to ABC7’s Cornell Barnard.
“We heard it was a shooting, an hour later we heard a child was involved it’s just heartbreaking,” said Mike.
“Evidence collected on the northbound side of the freeway may indicate the victims were not targeted and the child passenger was struck by a stray bullet,” the Highway Patrol said in a statement.
