Dad sentenced in killings of three children and death of wife

A Placer County judge in California sentenced an Indian American man to three consecutive life sentences in the killing of his family, reports Oxygen.

Police say Shankar Nagappa Hangud, 55, drove his car to the police station with his son’s body.

He pleaded guilty on September 13 to three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his three children and in assisting in the suicide of his wife.

According to People, Hangud confessed to the killings back in 2019. Police found three of his victims in his home.

“The sentencing of Shankar Hangud marks a painful close to an incredibly sad case,” Placer County District Attorney Morgan Gire told Oxygen. “The murders of the Hangud family were particularly senseless and left an entire community grappling with questions that simply cannot be answered.”

Police say he killed his children-20-year-old Varun Hangud, 16-year-old daughter Gauri Hangud, and 13-year-old son Nichal Hangud over several days. He also confessed in helping his wife, Jyothi Hangud, kill herself.

“This case shook our tight-knit community,” Rob Baquera, a spokesperson for the Roseville Police Department said. “The impacts of this horrible incident spread across many facets from classmates, coworkers, to neighbors.”

People reports Hangud told police he feared he couldn’t provide financially for his family.
