Chloé Zhao to Executive Produce Vincent Chin Series

Chloé Zhao will executive produce a limited series examining the murder of Vincent Chin and the civil rights movement it sparked, Deadline reports.

According to NBC News, the series was initially announced in December. It will be produced with the help of a media company called Participant.

The story will focus on the murder of 27-year-old Chin in Detroit in 1982. Chin was a Chinese American engineer who was celebrating his bachelor party on the night he was murdered by two white auto workers.

The autoworkers blamed Japanese car manufacturers for taking their jobs. They beat Chin so badly that he died of his injuries.

The men received minimal sentences of probation and a $3,000 fine.

Zhao told Deadline that she is honored to work on the film. She also praised Helen Zia, a journalist who was instrumental in leading the civil rights movement inspired by Chin’s murder.

“I was deeply moved by Helen’s personal connection to Vincent’s story as well as her incredibly insightful and nuanced perspective on this difficult yet inspiring story,” Zhao said. “I’m very honored to join the team and to embark on this journey together.”

Zia and the Chin estate have reached an agreement with Participant that this will be the only authorized series about Chin’s murder.
