AsAmNews scholarship fundraiser & winner announced

AsAmNews is excited to announce that Julia Tong, a senior at Columbia University, is the first winner of our new scholarship.

Tong will receive the $1500 at the successful completion of her internship with AsAmNews.

AsAmNews launched the scholarship as a way to assist students who would face an economic hardship by taking an unpaid internship.

Tong is set to graduate in May 2022 as a double major in English and Economics. She earned a place on Columbia University’s Dean’s List after her first semester and has been on it since with an overall GPA of 3.94.

“This is amazing news- thank you so much,” Tong declared after receiving the news of her award. “I’m excited to be working with you and AsAmNews starting in December.”

Please support the AsAmNews scholarship fund by contributing to our latest fundraising drive.

All those who contribute $40 or more will receive a thank you gift of one AsAmNews logoed hat.

You will receive two hats with a contribution of $75 or more and three hats for contributing $100 or more. The hats make a great gift or stocking stuffer for family and friends.

In addition, anyone who contributes $20 or more will be added to our AsAmNews Bad Ass Asian Wall of Fame.

Applications for our scholarship are now open. The deadline to apply is January 23, 2022.

The scholarship is made possible thanks to the generous contributions of our loyal readership. We launched our first fundraiser in 9 years in November 2020 to erase a significant budget deficit. The fundraiser not only succeeded in wiping out our deficit but also inspired this scholarship. Since our readers gave to us, we wanted to give back to the community.

Since its inception in 2012, AsAmNews has aimed to serve the Asian American Pacific Islander communities. We have sponsored voter registration and education drives and produced a concert as a fundraiser for Stop AAPI Hate.

We have also served as media sponsors for CAAMFest, the Asian American International Film Festival, and Chinese for Affirmative Action’s Celebration of Justice.

AsAmNews also supports small Asian American-owned businesses such as Eastwind Books, Nimble Made, Kulfi Beauty, and Lunar.

We like to say “AsAmNews has Asian America in its heart.” For us it’s not a slogan, it’s something we live by.

Please support our scholarship fundraiser by making a contribution today.
